The probability of liking you
"Actually, I've always liked you."
"Whether we're together or not..."
There's a line in *5 Centimeters Per Second*:
A person will meet approximately 29.2 million people in their lifetime, and
the probability of two people falling in love is 0.000049.
I looked up how 0.000049 was calculated:
The world population is over 6 billion.
A lifetime has: 80 * 365 = 29,200 days
. On average, you can meet about 1,000 people per day.
The total number of people you meet in your lifetime:
29,200 * 1,000 = 29,200,000.
The probability of meeting each other is: 29,200,000 / 6,000,000,000 = 0.00487.
If you live to 80, you'll probably know about 3,000 people.
The probability of meeting them is: 3,000 / 6,000,000,000 = 0.0000005 (five in ten million).
How many close friends does a person have in their lifetime?
Probability of getting to know each other:
20/6000000000 = 0.000000003
(three in a billion)
Probability of falling in love:
First, to fall in love, you need to know
each other. Of the 3000 people you meet in your lifetime, half are of the opposite sex.
Generally, people choose romantic partners from among 1500 people .
Second: How many people will you truly love in your lifetime?
Let's say ten. So the probability of falling in love with one person is: 10/1500 = 0.007 (seven in a thousand).
Third: So-called love is mutual attraction.
Therefore, the probability of two people falling in love is: 0.007 * 0.007 = 0.000049 (forty-nine in a million).
What I want to say is that
with such a small probability, the fact that I met you
, or that you became my friend
, or that you became my lover
, means that I really like you.
